Thank goodness! "Television's Zaniest Celebrity Chefs" have given us just what we need: The Great Recession Recipe Book, and encouraged us, too, in these lean times: "Yes, you can Make It!" With big smiles on the cover (Lookin' good, Steve and Lee! All, right, I don't know the Clever Cleaver Brothers, but they make us laugh on television--food for our hearts and souls.) They promise that their new cookbook offer meals that respect our budgets, comfort food to pass their S.E.E. Test, Simple Ingredients, Easy to Prepare, and Elegant. Each of their 38 specialties is shown in close-up color (You can really see the texture) with named to suite these times:
Congressional Corn Beef Hash (think about it), Debt Relief Pasta Fagioli ("It only taste expensive"), Margin-Call Meatballs, Earmark Turky Enchiladas, Hardball Ham Hocks & Black Eyed Peas. All made from ingredients we'll find at our grocery stores (Non-fat dairy, corn meal, honey . . . ). And simple directions, like how to roll up big blanched cabbage leaves after filling with a neat turkey mixture so "Sub-Prime Stuffed Cabbage" stays in six individual portions instead of becoming stew. That's where the Elegant comes in. Good advice on dicing, and cooking tips between chapters, along with food safety tips on p. 68. And as my family and friends can tell you, these Great Recession Recipe Book desserts are among my favorites: Privatized Pudding in a Cloud and Stimulus Plan Shoofly Pie ("Every American Gets a Piece of the Pie!"). These recipes are fun as well as low-cost-effective, and good gifts to make good times.
